Osterwochenende

Wenn man doppelt so viel Zeit an einem Wochenende hat, dann muss man die Zeit natürlich gut nutzen, und genau das habe ich am Osterwochenende dieses Jahr gemacht. Insgesamt habe ich die folgenden Städte zum ersten Mal besucht: Hachenburg, Porz, Zündorf und Troisdorf. Komische Kombination? Das wir sich klären…

In Hachenburg hat Tim studiert vor ein paar Jahren und am Freitag sind wir dahin mit dem Auto gefahren, einfach als Tagesausflug. Die Fahrt sollte knapp über eine Stunde dauern, allerdings dauerte unsere Fahrt wegen eines Umfalles mehr als 2 Stunden. Zum Glück wurde niemand schwer verletzt (oder das glaube ich zumindest…), und wir kamen trotzdem gut in der Zeit an.

Hachenburg selbst ist eine sehr schöne kleine Stadt mit ungefähr 6.000 Einwohnern – 150% größer als mein kleines Dorf in Nordengland. In der Mitte der Stadt befindet sich das Schloss, das Teil der Hochschule ist. Da es ein Feiertag war, war nicht
soviel los in der Stadt, also wir haben uns entschieden, im Westerwald spazieren zu gehen. Auf dem Weg in den Wald kamen wir zu einem Teich mit kleinen Enten und nicht so kleinen Gänsen – Gott sei Dank stand ein Zaun zwischen uns und den zischenden Gänsen! Im Wald war es sehr schön. Einfach Ruhe. Daran habe ich mich irgendwie ungewöhnt (ob das ein deutsches Wort ist oder nicht weiß ich nicht), einfach Ruhe zu haben, wenn ich draußen bin – es erinnerte mich ein bisschen an Zuhause im kleinen Dorf in Yorkshire. Langsam machten wir uns auf den Weg wieder in die Stadt, wo ich eine Schokowaffel mit Eis genoss und lernte, dass “Waffel” ein weibliches Wort ist. Wer hätte gedacht? #languagegeek

Am nächsten Tag fuhren wir mit dem Auto nach Porz, eine Stadt, die zu Köln gehört, und auch in der Tim groß geworden ist – natürlich nutzte ich die Chance, meine erste deutsche Stadt wieder zu besuchen! Am Rhein gingen wir abends spazieren, wo ich ein paar sehr schöne Fotos gemacht habe dank dem Sonnenuntergang. Wir gingen den ganzen Weg nach Zündorf, wo wir Kölsch tranken außerhalb einer Bar in der Sonne. Danach fuhren wir mit dem Auto zu McDonalds – als ob ich wieder ein Teenager wäre… in einem Parkplatz bin ich selbst mit dem Auto von Tim gefahren, also mit dem Steuerrad auf der linken Seite, und so komisch war das nicht. Allerdings blieb ich immer im ersten Gang und, tja, wir waren in einem Parkplatz mit keinen anderen Autos, aber immerhin..!

Am Ostersonntag gingen wir mit der Mama von Tim essen, und zwar in ein All You Can Eat Chinese Restaurant. Ich konnte fast nicht mehr laufen, nachdem ich so viel wie möglich mampfte (deutsche Leser – sagt ihr mampfen?!). Nachdem wir zwei (OK, vielleicht drei) Portionen von Eis hatten, ging’s ins Krankenhaus.

Ja, ins Krankenhaus sind wir am Ostersonntag gegangen. Aber keine Sorge – das Problem lag auf dem Bein von Tims Mama. Sie hat sich irgendwie wehgetan und konnte nicht so gut gehen, also wir dachten, Vorsicht ist besser als Nachsicht. Nach 4 Stunden kamen wir endlich raus (naja, zumindest wird der Ostersonntag nicht einfach vergessen werden!) und Tim und ich fuhren mit dem Zug endlich nach Köln, wo wir uns den Dom anschaute und Cocktails tranken.

Montag, nach leckerem Frühstück in einer Bäckerei, fuhren wir wieder nach Frankfurt, mit Zwischenhalt in Troisdorf, einfach weil ich den Namen der Stadt schön finde (wegen der Mischung aus Französisch und Deutsch) und wir hatten sowieso viel Zeit. Die Stadt ist schön, nichts besonders, aber mit einem schönen Park, wo wir auch Rehe gesehen haben. Nach dem schönen Spaziergang ging’s dann zurück nach Frankfurt.

Und das war mein Osterwochenende! Spannend war die Tage auf jeden Fall, und es war auch schön, aus Frankfurt für ein paar Tage zu kommen. Das nächste Mal, wenn ich wieder Frankfurt verlasse, wird wahrscheinlich Ende Mai sein, wenn ich endlich England besuche – und ich freue mich sehr darauf!

If you have double the amount of time on a weekend than normal, then you have to use the time well, and that’s what I did this year on Easter Weekend! All together I visited the following towns for the first time: Hachenburg, Porz, Zündorf and Troisdorf. Weird combination? It’ll make sense in a minute…

Tim studied in Hachenburg a few years ago and on the Friday we headed there by car for a day trip.The journey there should take just over an hour, but due to an accident it took us about two. Thankfully nobody was seriously injured in the accident (or so I think…) and we made it to Hachenburg still with quite a bit of time on our hands.

Hachenburg itself is a small, pretty town. Or a pretty small town – however you see it. It’s got around 6,000 inhabitants, meaning it’s a whole one-and-a-half times bigger than my little village in the north of England in terms of population. In the middle of the town there’s a castle which belongs to the university. Due to it being a holiday there wasn’t much going on in the town, so we decided to go for a walk in the Westerwald, a forest nearby. On the way to the forest we came across a small pond with small ducks and not-so-small geese – thankfully there was a fence between us and the hissing geese! It was really nice in the forest – just, quiet. Peaceful. I’ve kind of become unused to that after living in Frankfurt – hearing absolutely nothing when being outside. It reminded me a little bit of being at home in my small village in t’Yorkshire. We slowly made our way back into the town centre where I enjoyed a tasty chocolate waffle, and also learnt the the word for waffle in German (Waffel) is, in fact, a feminine noun. Who’d a thunk it? #languagegeek

On the next day, we drove to Porz, a town which is a city district of Cologne and also a city where Tim grew up – of course I’m going to use the chance to visit my first German city! In the evening we went for a walk along the Rhine where I took some quite nice photos thanks to the sunset. We walked all the way to Zündorf where we enjoyed a Kölsch outside in the sun. Afterwards, we drove to McDonalds – it was like I was teenager again! I drove Tim’s car myself in a car park, with the steering wheel on the left side. It actually wasn’t as weird as I thought it was going to be. Then again, I didn’t leave first gear and we were in a car park with no other cars… but still!

On Easter Sunday we went for lunch with Tim’s mum to an All You Can Eat Chinese restaurant. I could barely walk after stuffing my face with as much as possible. After two (OK, maybe three) portions of ice cream, we went to hospital.

Yep, we went to hospital on Easter Sunday. But don’t worry – the problem was to do with Tim’s mum’s leg. She’d somehow hurt it and couldn’t walk very well so we thought better safe than sorry. After 4 hours we were finally able to leave (at least it won’t be an Easter Sunday to forget!) and Tim and I went to Cologne on the train where we saw the Cathedral and had some cocktails.

On Monday, after a tasty breakfast in a bakery, we drove back to Frankfurt, with a short stop in Troisdorf, purely because I like the name of the place (due to the mixture of French and German) and we had loads of time to spare anyway. The town is quite pretty, nothing special, with a really nice park where we also saw some deer. After having a nice walk in the park, we drove back to Frankfurt.

And that was my Easter Weekend! Pretty exciting few days, and it was also nice to get out of Frankfurt for a few days. Next time I leave Frankfurt will probably be end of May when I finally head back home for a few days – I’m really looking forward to it!
